Katie Fox was fatally stabbed in the neck whilst waiting for her bus home from the centre of Birmingham, in what is the third stabbing in the area within a month.
The 34-year-old was attacked at around 9pm on 7th November as she waited along Smallbrook Queensway outside the Bullring shopping centre – a busy part of the city often crowded with commuters and people having Friday night drinks.
Katie was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth hospital but she died three days later from her injuries
Djeison Rafael, 21, was quickly charged the attack. He also faces charges related to two further assaults causing actual bodily harm and possession of a blade.
This harrowing event has left many feeling unsafe walking around the city. Speaking to the BBC, Tire Olorire, a young girl who was walking in Birmingham city centre a few days after the attack, expressed her anxieties following this attack: "It could be me, it could be my friends - I'm not sure if I am able walk out by myself or if I have to bring someone with me every time."’
In a heartwarming tribute issued via the police, Katie Fox’s family described her as “a shining light” in their lives. They said she was "special in every way" and "everything a daughter could be and much more".
Echoing the feelings of the thousands of families who lose sisters, daughters, mothers and friends to gender-based violence every year they added "A part of us was snatched away on that very fateful night, a part of us also vanished suddenly, when you passed away, leaving us all with such sadness and heartache.”
Police inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
